Ghana’s Black Stars won the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations in imperious style by beating Nigeria 4⃣-1⃣ on Sunday. Stephen Sarfo netted a brace while Atinga and Cobbina scored one each for the Black Stars. Rabiu Ali notched a late consolation for the Super Eagles. Nigeria entered the final as the favourites, having defeated Ghana 2-0 in a group game earlier in the tournament but were completely taken aback on the night by a determined Ghana.
The first goal came in the 45th minute when Sarfo turned brilliantly and on a half-volley dispatched the ball into the net. Further misery awaited Nigeria in the 2nd half when Afeez Aremu conceded a penalty which was dispatched by Vincent Atinga.
Stephen Eze then dug Nigeria’s own grave by conceding yet another penalty which was converted by Sarfo before Winnful Cobbina made it 4-0 late on. Though Rabiu Ali scored a late free kick to pull one back for Nigeria, it was Ghana who danced away into the night with the trophy.
