52-year-old pop icon, Janet Jackson revealed insecurity and self-doubt gripped her early on in her career and she didn’t consider herself sexy until she was in her 30s. ‘I got out of a funky relationship and finally got back to me. I went to therapy, which was all about finding that thing you like about yourself,’ the mum-of-one explained.
‘The realization that, you know what, you’re not so bad after all. I’m not saying you’re great or you’re the best, but it’s not as bad as you were made to feel that it was.’
During the candid sit-down with InStyle, Michael Jackson’s younger sister said that although she struggled to embrace her body, she learnt to love the skin she was in after realising that there ‘isn’t just one thing that is considered beautiful. Beautiful comes in all shapes, sizes, and colours.’ This led to her eventually falling in love with the small of her back and the smile that she once thought made her look like ‘the Joker because it was so big’. The What Have You Done For Me Lately songstress, who is in the midst of staging a major comeback with a World Tour, also opened up about losing her father Joe Jackson to pancreatic cancer on 27 June.
‘It’s very tough,’ she said. ‘But it was also difficult coming back because I was very much behind [with] rehearsals.’ After a difficult few weeks, the mother of one was given a reason to smile when she was honoured as a ‘phenomenal woman in music’ at the 2018 Black Girl Rock awards.
